Abstract:

When the poet gets away from his homeland, his friends, or his beloved, he longs for them and expresses this feeling in his nostalgic poetry. This paper intends to study nostalgia andexpatriation by using analytic and conventional methodologies. Among many poets who have practiced thesephenomenais ibn Al-Saatiwhose poetry appeared to be a reflection of nostalgia andexpatriation. Nostalgia is an arbitrary literary term in the poetry of those poets who left their homeland and were filled with longing for it. Expatriation is the sentiment that dominates a person so he experiences depression and distress for what he abandoned. Nostalgia and expatriationinclude different kinds for example, nostalgia and expatriation for one’s homeland, for the greatold days, for a previous social position, and for the return of soul to its origin. The first kind is longing for a placeas a result of distance from one’s homeland. The second kind is a yearning for a specific period of time. The third one is wishing to return to a previous social position and respect that one deserves. The last kind of nostalgia and expatriation is the spiritual one which is the spiritual experience of asceticswho hope and wish to return to the other world. All these different kinds of nostalgia and expatriation appear in ibn Al-Saati’s poetry, an Iranian poet in origin. This research argues that ibnAl-Saati’s nostalgic and expatriate poems are the consequence of his nostalgic and expatriate feelings about his friends, homeland, and beloved. This study uses analytic and conventional methodology for studying ibnAl-Saati’sCollection ofPoems
