Abstract:

Translation quality assessment (TQA) is one of the fields of translation studies. Its focus is on the relationship between the translated text from the source text into the target text. This study has applied House’s (1997) TQA model to a Persian translation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations to assess the quality of this translation. The errors have been identified and categorized. Based on House’s model, the errors are classified into overt and covert errors. Overt errors involve seven categories: 1) Not translated 2) Slight change in meaning 3) Significant change in meaning 4) Distortion of meaning 5) Break of the source language system 6) Creative translation, and 7) Cultural filtering. The results of the study show that due to the presence of many errors, the Persian translators have not translated the novel carefully. Also, based on House’s model this translation is said to be a kind of overt translation.
