Lateral intake structure is a hydraulic structure which has to be design to divert more flow discharge and low sediment under the same flow conditions. Up to now many studies have been conducted in a rectangular channel and design criteria have been presented. The main goal of this study, which is a first study, is to conduct experimental test in a trapezoidal canal and to answer to this important question that the inclining the canal wall can effect the flow and sediment entering the offtake canal. To reach such goal, extensive experimental tests are conducted in the hydraulic laboratory of college of water sciences engineering of Shahid Chamran University. Two sets of tests were conducted. The first set, hydraulic tests, including twenty tests with no sediment. The purpose of these tests was to measure the three velocity component of flow and other flow characteristics. Then three dimensional model of SSIIM 2 was calibrated and verified by the experimental data. The SSIIM 2 model then was applied for other flow condition. In other words, 40 more result of flow characteristics was computed by SSIIM 2 model. By analysis of the flow characteristics obtain from 60 tests, the stream tube dimensions were determine and relation was developed to predict stream tube dimensions. The overall results of the first series of test confirmed that inclination of canal wall modified the flow pattern in front of intake. The second series of tests was conducted with suspended sediment feeding upstream. High dense plastic particles with specified gravity of 1.04 were used instead of suspended materials. Analysis of these data shows that inclination of canal wall can reduce the sediment entry to the intake. The most important reason for this reduction is that the stream tube width at the bed decreases. Foe example, the stream tube width at 36% of flow depth for wall slope of 1:1.5 in comparison with vertical wall, up to 80% is reduced. Since the sediment concentration in the bed is high, the weight of sediment enters the intake is reduced. For the same flow discharge ratio, the amount of sediment enters the intake for wall slope of 1:1.5 is reduced up to 65% compare to the vertical wall. The important results obtained from the study was that, the sediment entry to the intake is reaches to the minimum value, when the approaching Froud number in the main canal is 0.36. For the same flow condition, the flow discharge for wall slope of 1:1.5, is increased up to 60% compare with vertical wall.
