Abstract:

This experiment conducted to study response of spring and facultative bread wheat genotypes to salinity stress in different climatic zones and to evaluate and select the best genotypes in a no replicated systematic design for yield comparison and as observatory comparing 230 promising lines along with salinity tolerant and adapted cultivars as local checks all the same in 4 agricultural research stations in crop year1998-99. The soil and water electrical conductivity for the studied area were between 6.5-11.7 ds m-1. Planting area for each plot was 1.5 m2 and the recordings such as germination date, salinity damage, response to yellow and brown rust in natural conditions, number of daysto heading and maturity, lodging score, plant height, grain loss score, grain color and thousand grain weight (TGW)were made through developmental stages of each genotype.47 elite lines were selected based on the grain yield and the mean of all the local checks of four stations with grain yield of more than 2.7 t ha-1.The elite genotypes were evaluated and scored for yellow and brown rust tolerance in 13 locations under artificial mist irrigation system and the most tolerant genotypes were selected. The selected elite genotypes were tolerant to grain loss and lodging, days to heading were within 101 to 110 days and the plant height was not less than 70cm under salinity stress.
