Abstract:

Lubrication is the process, or technique employed to reduce wear of one or both surfaces in close proximity, and moving relative to each another, by interposing a substance called lubricant between the surfaces to carry or to help carry the load between the opposing surfaces. In lubrication process, it has been recognized that the friction coefficient decreases with decreasing viscosity of lubricant oil in lubrication therefore, as the viscosity of the lubricant decreases, the wear rate increases due to a decrease of load-carrying capacity of the lubricant, for this purpose to enhancement of lubricant application nanoparticles have been proposed to decrease the friction coefficient and wear rate. These nanoparticles by improving the mechanism of boundary lubrication sustain the lubricant applications. In this paper, selected examples of recently developed nanoadditives are introduced, and the fundamental tribological mechanisms that control their friction and wear behavior under boundary lubrication regimes are presented.
