Abstract:

Discourse analysis means examining how language functions and means in different social contexts. It can be applied to any case of literary works, specially those literary works that bring new ways of representing symbols and writing. Gothic novels are a kind of literary works that use the word with the meanings beyond the text. By analyzing two gothic novels, The Raven and The Blind Owl, this research aims to gain an understanding of functions and meanings of gothic themes that are similar in these two novels.Sadegh Hedayat and Edgar Allan Poe are two of the most influential and outstanding writers in short story writing whose works have been interested for many critics, writers and translators across the world of art. Hedayat and Poe introduced the Gothic style of writing to the world of art at their times, in which fear, darkness، death and disappointment are the main gothic themes. Besides being a writer, both Hedayat and Poe were skillful in poetry, school of realism and literary criticism. The context of stories in Hedayat and Poe’s works enjoys unique characteristics and elements which have given them a special style
