Abstract:
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is one of the antioxidant enzymes that reduce oxidative stress in the cells environment. In normal aerobic respiration, many living organisms produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage normal tissues and cells by intracellular targeting with their harmful functions [1]. Hence, SOD forms the first line of defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS) by converting superoxide anion (O2-) into the forms of harmless molecular oxygen and less toxic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) [2]. Several investigations have revealed a wide scope for clinical using of SOD [3]. In treatment of cancer cells, SOD can serve as a gene therapy target [4]. Besides, in critical care medicine for the resolution of inflammation diseases and diabetes, a beneficial role of SOD has long been recognized [5].
