Analyzing Spatial Spread of Contaminants and their Resources in Baghershahr, Iran abstract

Since 1950, huge polluting industries such as Tehran oil refinery and its affiliates, established in the south of Iran's capital Tehran. This paper investigates pollutant sources and spatial distribution of contaminations, in air, soils and plants of Baghershahr. The studied area is a small city located 4 kilometers south of Tehran. The data received from the measurements was made by Baghershahr municipality. We use GIS spatial analysis tools to produce contaminants zoning maps and calculate feature statistics. Finding indicates a high level of pollution in air, soils and plants, so that in many cases, contamination was much higher than the standard limits. Zoning of air contaminants has not been adjacent to the pollutant sources and mostly affected by the prevailing winds and air pollution in Tehran city. Generally, in southern and eastern edges of the study area, pollution was higher. Pollutants are less likely to penetrate from air into soils and plants. Soil pollution mostly resulted from leakage and penetration of pollutants and wastewater into the soil, contaminate groundwater simultaneously, and from irrigation using these polluted water. Growing plants in contaminated soils and irrigation with contaminated water are major contributors to the pollution of plants as well
