Abstract:

This study investigates the effect of a tall building on theperformance of the chimney of the short adjoining building locatedon the boundary between the two buildings. The simulations werecarried out for six different cases using ANSYS based on Realizablek- ε turbulent model. In this modeling, at first, the performance of thechimney of an isolated building is evaluated. Then simulations areconducted after placing a tall building next to it. And in the end, theproblem is assessed after the design changes made to the chimney.Results showed that the placement of the neighboring tall buildingadversely affected the outflow from the chimney. The average massflow rate of the third and fourth cases had a negative value whichindicated the occurrence of downdraft. After design changes made tothe chimney, it was found that the average mass flow rate wasincreased considerably.
