Abstract:

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results ofstereotactic breast core needle biopsy in a tertiary breast center of TehranUniversity of Medical Sciences. Methods: Patients who were candidates for mammography-guidedstereotactic breast core biopsy from March ۲۰۱۱ to December ۲۰۱۳ were includedin this study. Stereotactic biopsy was performed by a dedicated prone Hologicmammography unit employing an automatic biopsy device with a ۱۴-gaugeneedle. Patients with malignant or premalignant biopsy results were followed upwith surgical pathology reports and patients with benign core biopsy findings werefollowed up with mammograms. Results: Among the ۱۵۰ patients who were included in the final analyses, ۳۰had malignant findings on stereotactic biopsy and ۱۰ patients had a premalignantpathology result on stereotactic biopsy. The remaining ۱۱۰ patients had benignresults on histopathology; however, in ۳۰ patients, wire localization and surgery ofthe same area were performed due to either discordant mammography-pathologyfindings or clinical suspicion of malignancy and in two of them, advancingpathologic grade was witnessed.Atotal of ۸۰ patients with benign histopathologicresults had follow-up mammograms and the follow-up period was between ۱۲months to ۳ years. The sensitivity and specificity of stereotactic breast core biopsyin this study were۹۴%and ۹۶%, respectively. Conclusions: Stereotactic breast core needle biopsy is an effective and safemethod in evaluation of suspicious mammography-detected lesions but cautionshould be warranted when taking results into account, especially inmammography-pathology discordance and in patients with premalignantpathology reports.
