Abstract:

Helping the students of foreign language (FL) develop their knowledge of vocabulary can have a significant role in their overall language learning and development process. However, as claimed in some studies, teachers and instructors are often ill-equipped to implement vocabulary training strategies effectively since they are also pressurized to make lessons more engaging and effective (Al-Khresheh & Al-Ruwaili, ۲۰۲۰). The present study was an attempt to have a review of the effects of the methods used to teach English vocabulary through visual and auditory methods. It has tried to investigate the progress of the students who have received these types of teaching and compare the results of the studies conducted in the related fields. It was concluded that both methods have been effective in helping the students learn and learners have progressed significantly according to their memory type. Clearly, those who had more active auditory memory benefited more from auditory-based methods and those who had more active visual memory benefited more from visual-based methods. However, in a number of studies in which both methods were sued, a subtle superiority was observed in favor of visual-based methods and memories
