Abstract:

In this paper, the most important power quality(PQ) issues in industrial microgrids, voltage sag and swell arediscussed and a cost effective solution is proposed to mitigate theeffects of these PQ disturbances. A new and active mediumvoltage distribution system with the high capacity DGs, supplyingthe industrial facilities such as large factories and refineriesindependently, is called industrial microgrid. Supplying voltagequality is so vital in this kind of grids, which can affect thesensitive loads. There are many sensitive equipment in industrialmicrogrids such as Variable Speed Drives, Programmable LogicController and other power electronic based equipments thatshould be immune from voltage disturbances to prevent damagesand economic losses. Distribution Static synchronousCompensator (D-STATCOM) as one of the most importantcustom power devices is a perfect solution which can solve powerquality problems in distribution systems and microgridseffectively. In this paper an appropriate control strategyimplemented in VSC block to create proper reference signals forswitching inverter valves in D-STATCOM. Many simulations arecarried out using MATLAB/Simulink to confirm the goodperformance of D-STATCOM in mitigating PQ issues.
