Abstract:

Installing capacitor banks in series with transmissionlines is a more prevalent and cost-effective technique toincrease a transmission line's power transfer capability.Most of these transmission lines are protected usingconventional phasor based distance relays that operatebased on voltage and current signals, measured locally.So, installing capacitor banks in series with such lineswill raise new problems to the existent protection systemof that line .Where, the most common problems in seriescompensated transmission systems are: voltage inversion,current inversion, and sub-harmonic frequencyoscillations and DC offsets and that potentially lead tounintended operation of convention distance relays . Bydoing a complete literature review on distance protectionof series compensated lines and providing a detailedoverview of the issues that need to be resolved, thisresearch tries to study performance analysis of distancerelay and find the solutions to improve a distance onseries-compensated lines.
