Abstract:

Reinforcement of structures against the lateral loads is one of the issues and influencing factors during the useful life of the structure and of course its designers. The use of shear walls in the role of one of the main options in designs is considered along with the use of systems such as bending frames and braces. In this article, we’re going to investigate the effect of dimensions of circular openings on the center of steel shear walls. In the steel shear walls set, circular openings can be used with different shapes and sizes if it’s needed. Steel shear walls act like cantilevered plate girders in which the floor beams as their stiffener, steel sheets as their web, and the columns serve as their flanges. The use of the diagonal tension field, which is created after the steel sheet is buckled, is the basis of the idea of shear walls. Six frame models with different dimensions were carried out with the aim of studying the effect of the size of circular openings by changing their dimensions, by monitoring the movement of the top level of the frame. In general, it can be said that the shear panel, whether with or without the opening, shows a better performance than the frame without the shear wall.
