Abstract:

All machining processes contain vibrations generated by structural sources such as a machine’s moving parts or by the interaction between cutting toolsand workpieces. Relative motion between the cutting tool and work-pieces is one of the most relevant factor of producing regenerative chatter phenomenonwhich results poor surface finish, reduced productivity, and even tool damage. Modeling static and dynamic behavior of machine tools is a crucial task toprovide reliable and high productivity capabilities of machining process with low cost. The main scope of this research is to propose a reliable and accuratedynamic model of a milling machine including its component’s physical and geometrical characteristics in the virtual platform using bond graph approach. In the proposed method modular modelling procedure offered by bond graph approach makes it possible to develop complex model including moreparameters affecting the performance of machining process such as friction, and thermophysical properties of materials for thermal modeling of the systemunder investigation with more details. The proposed model is utilized for chatter stability investigation employing both the time-domain and frequencydomainresponse analysis. Simulation results indicate the effectiveness and advantages of combinational method to distinguish between the stable and theunstable working condition zones, where chatter may arise.
