Abstract:

By the end of ۲۰۲۰, all EU member states need to ensure that all newly constructed buildings consume‘nearly zero’ energy and that their energy needs are produced locally as much as possible and withrenewable sources; a concept called nearly Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB).Looking at modern optionsof energy conservation in buildings it is necessary to assure energy efficiency first. When the energyload of a building is highly decreased, then innovative options of energy conservation can be introduced. The background and development of the main modern methods for the reduction of energy needs, finaland primary energy consumption are analyzed. Differentiation between options for existing and newlyconstructed buildings is pointed out. Modern options of energy conservation in buildings are focusedon innovative architecture, shape, structure, materials of a building and of course systems utilizingrenewable energy. A very simple way of reducing building energy needs is the utilization of solar energyin a passive, but planned way. A specific shape of solar buffer space should be created in the building. In high latitude countries the buffer space should be of a specific design containing two cuboid subspaceswith specific internal overhang and a well-planned extension of the south glazed facade. Thepaper presents modern renewable energy technologies as technologies with roots in past ideas of usingthe environment in an effective way. It underlines that future innovative and efficient buildingtechnologies will use building integrated renewable, mainly solar technologies. Zero-energy buildingsthat are also grid-independent (GIB-ZEBs) ensure that carbon emissions are curtailed and that theelectricity grid will retain its flexibility to make appropriate use of large, base-load power productionunits.
