Abstract:

Ti۶Al۴V commonly known as Ti۶۴, is a lightweight alloy with particular properties such asgood strength, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility which make it the alloy of choice formany different applications. In comparison to conventional sintering methods, spark plasmasintering (SPS) is a rapid sintering process that uses pressure and temperature simultaneously,resulting in higher relative densities and better mechanical properties. In this study, the sparkplasma sintering of Ti۶۴ powder was performed at ۸۵۰ ⸰C for ۱۰ min, and the properties wereevaluated. Microstructural examination, relative density measurement, microhardness and thecompressive strength determination were performed. A qualitative phase analysis via X-raydiffraction technique, and the microstructural studies revealed the presence of some β phaseformation due to transus transformation. Compressive strength of about ۸۴۰ MPa and hardnessof more than ۳۰۰ VHN were recorded for the SPSed samples.
