Investigating the Prevalence of Mental Health among Nursing Students during the COVID-19 pandemic: A Systematic Review Article abstract

Introduction: Nursing students, as future nurses, are expected to play a significant role inmaintaining the future community health status. Therefore, all dimensions of their health,especially mental health, are substantial. Reciprocally, following the Coronavirus disease2019 (COVID-19), the mental health of all individuals, especially nurses, has beenaffected. Thus, considering the noteworthiness of nursing students' role as future healthcareproviders, alongside their greater vulnerability to COVID-19, the present study hasbeen conducted aiming to determining the prevalence of mental health among nursingstudents during the COVID-19 pandemic.Method: The present study was conducted by reviewing the published sources indatabases of “Magiran”, “Irandoc”, “SID”, “ScienceDirect”, “PubMed” and “GoogleScholar”, using the keywords of “Nursing-Student”, “Nurse”, “Mental”, “COVID-19”,“Psycho”, and eventually “Health”, between 2020 to 2022. Accordingly, among the 168initial articles, 25 articles were selected and analyzed.Findings: Most of the reviewed studies have reported the existence of mental disordersamong nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, numerous studieshave stated the prevalence of “depression”, “anxiety” and “stress” disorders among thementioned group of individuals. Meanwhile, “anxiety” disorder was more frequentcompared to others. In addition, other studies have indicated the presence of “obsessivecompulsivedisorder (OCD)” and “post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)” among nursingstudents, which might be secondary to “stress” and “anxiety” disorders. Eventually,COVID related sleep disturbances among nursing students have been mentioned by manystudies.Concussions: Based on the findings, “depression”, “anxiety”, “stress”, “OCD”, “PTSD”and “sleep” disorders have been observed among nursing students during COVID-19pandemic. Considering the importance of nursing students' role in the future communityhealth status, sufficient mental health supports and considerations among this group ofindividuals are indispensable.
