The relationship between spiritual health and emotional intelligence withattitude towards smoking in nursing students

Abstract:

Background: One of the threating factors that has effect on students is the use of tobaccoproducts. Emotional intelligence can act as a protective factor against risky behaviors such assmoking. On the other hand, students manage stress by faith and religiosity. The aim of study isthe relationship between emotional intelligence and spiritual health and attitudes toward nursingstudents.Methods: This research was a correlational-descriptive study that was conducted throughconvenience sampling method in ۲۰۲۲. The data collection tools included Paloutzian and Ellison'sSpiritual Health Questionnaire, Bradbery and Graves' Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, andShoor et al.'s Attitude toward Smoking Questionnaire. A total of ۱۴۶ nursing students who werewilling to participate completed the questionnaires. The data was analyzed with SPSS softwareversion ۲۱ through descriptive statistical methods, Pearson's correlation coefficient and linearregression. P value was set <۰.۰۵.Results: The average age of the students was ۲۲.۷۴ ± ۳.۲۶ years. ۵۴.۱% of male and ۴۵.۹% offemale students participated in this study. There was a positive and significant relationshipbetween spiritual health and attitude towards smoking (r = ۰.۳۵, P < ۰.۰۰۱) and between emotionalintelligence and attitude towards smoking (r = ۰.۲۶, P < ۰.۰۰۱). Attitude towards smokingaccording to gender (r = ۰.۳۵, P < ۰.۰۰۱), history of smoking by family (r = ۰.۱۷, P < ۰.۰۳) andhaving a friend who is addicted (r=۰.۱۹, P < ۰.۰۲). The spiritual health (ß=۰.۲۹, t=۳.۵۱, P<۰.۰۰۱)had a greater contribution in explaining the attitude towards smoking.Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, the attitude towards tobacco is relatedto factors such as age, history of smoking and having an addicted friend, emotional intelligenceand especially spiritual health. Therefore, university authorities can play an effective role byconducting educational workshops in order to strengthen and nurture the components of spiritualhealth and emotional intelligence to prevent using smoking by students.
