Channel boundary delineation based on a novel interpretation technique abstract

As one of the most prevailing stratigraphic characteristics, channel events are significant in terms of hydrocarbon exploration. This article describes an innovative seismic attribute on the basis of the partial area effect strategy, which considers an individual discontinuity in the edge region in order to recover channel borders. We applied the suggested approach to a synthetic time slice composed of two-channelized features of varied sinuosity and thickness, as well as a field data set from the Penobscot prospect, accommodating canyon-channel occurrences. We compared the partial area effect algorithm with some eminent classic edge detectors and seismic attributes. The results indicated that implementing the appointed algorithm could lead to a more accurate map of channelized events less influenced by random background noise and striped artifacts. Likewise, the partial area effect method efficiently localized fewer false-positive and more true-positive elements in synthetic and field examples.
