High-risk factors for young drivers involved in multiple vehicle crashes

Year after year, a relatively large portion of young drivers encounter serious traffic accidents, especially in developing countries. This paper examines risk factors which may intensify the severity of injury for young drivers involved in multiple vehicle crashes in Khorasan Razavi Province of Iran. For the years 2009 and 2010, information about fatally and nonfatally injured drivers under the age of 30 were selected from the database of Traffic Police and Legal Medicine Organization of the province, respectively. A multivariate analysis using binary logistic regression model was applied and results have shown a significant correlation between accident location and injury severity. Involved vehicle type and gender were also other risk factors that pursued accident location. In terms of transportation safety, results of accident location concerning serious multiple vehicle crashes provides a better understanding for policy makers of transport department to focus more on providing safer rural and suburban road network
