Quantification of leachate discharged using the Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model (case study: Saravan landfill) abstract

Accumulation of any waste material in a landfill possesses several potential problems. The possibility of contamination of soil, groundwater, and surface water is a small part of the problems that occur for the surrounding environment due to the outflow of leachate and liquids from the landfill. Saravan landfill was investigated as a case study. Due to the low natural drainage capacity of the land, proximity to the sea, and high permeability of the soil in the area as well as the presence of sandy loam texture with pebbles in the landfill site, possibility of leakage is very high. In this study, several design scenarios were investigated and with the help of Hydraulic evaluation of landfill performance (HELP) v3.07, the amount of leachate in each scenario was determined.
