The effect of biofilm formation on the severity of pathogenic mycobacteria abstract

Background: Biofilm formation has been observed in different types of bacteria, such as Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, etc. The formation of mycobacterium biofilms in the airways of cystic fibrosis patients, pneumonia with ventilators in chronic lung patients, is one of the important factors in prolonging the treatment period, aggravating clinical symptoms and even death of patients.Materials and Methods: By using databases such as scholar, PubMed, web of science, Google, preliminary studies on biofilm and its role in the severity of pathogenicity of mycobacteria were conducted. Then, it was examined the protocols and its measurement methods, including the microtiter plate method. Results: M. tuberculosis can create a biofilm that is involved in the process of necrosis and cavity formation in the lung tissue. It also forms biofilms on clinical biomaterials. Biofilm development is an important factor in antimicrobial resistance, as it provides protection against antibiotics that are normally active against the same bacteria in the planktonic state. Conclusion: The formation of biofilm can be considered as one of the main factors of failure in treatment with an antimicrobial substance, however, more research can determine the role of biofilm in the severity of mycobacterium pathogenicity more precisely.
