Association of Mental Workload, Occupational Fatigue, and Job Stress in Emergency Nurses: Iran

Background: Mental workload (MW) and occupational fatigue (OF) are among the harmful factors in the working environment of the emergency nursing profession, which can be related to the quality of care provided and job stress (JS) in emergency nurses. Therefore, a study was conducted in 2023 in Ardabil to investigating the relationship between MW, MF, and JS in emergency nurses. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted by measuring Occupational Fatigue (OF), Job Stress (JS), and the Mental Workload (MW) of emergency nurses in Ardabil hospitals. Information was collected through a checklist was used to record the demographic information and NASA-TLX, Job Stress Orly and Giordano, and SOFI questionnaires. The statistical analysis done by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 22. Results: The average mental state of participants was 16.7±3.6. Forty percentages   of nurses have a high mental load. The average condition of the OF was high level (49.02±4.2. 23.2%). About job stress, 45.5, 25.9, and 28.6 percent were at high, medium, and low levels, respectively. A direct and significant relationship observed between MW, JS, and OF (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In general, the average MW, JS, and OF among emergency nurses were high. Our estimation shows that, almost half and about a quarter of the emergency nurses are under JS and OF, respectively. Therefore, to improve emergency nurse’s healthy conations, productivity, and creating safe condition in emergencies, the control and management of this harmful occupational factor should be under continuous monitoring.
