Abstract:
Defining the kinetics and kinetic parameters of a bioprocess is an important step toward translating the considered model to industrial scales (scale-up). Akinetic model describes the rate of substrate utilization, growth of biomass, and product formation. This study examines the kinetics of abatch fermentation process to produce bioethanol from substrate and biomass. Glucose and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast were considered asthe substrate and biomass, respectively. In the present study the Saccharomyces cerevisiae growth kinetics, glucose utilization and ethanol productivity wasinvestigated using different kinetic models such as Monod, Logistic and modified Gompertz model. The kinetic constants were determined through the fittingof experimental data with the kinetic model equations. The logistic function model described well concentration of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, glucose,and ethanol. In addition, the concentration of product was well described by the modified Gompertz model too. Experimental results showed that both the Logistic and the modified Gompertz models resulted in better fit than other models.
