The Relationship between Linguality and Gender of ESL learners with their reading performance in poetry abstract
This study intends to find out whether linguality and gender have any relationship with reading strategies awareness and use of ESL learners while reading poetry. To this purposea reading compression test whose passages were three poems with 30 items and a reading strategies questionnaire of 37 items showing what strategies students used while readingpoems were employed. The analyzed data manifested that bilingual learners reported moreawareness and use of reading strategies than their monolingual peers. It has also been manifested that male and female students did not show any significant difference in theirreading strategy d awareness an use while reading poetry. Furthermore, the interactionbetween linguality and gender in reading strategy scores was non-significant. It is concluded that linguality has a significant effect on reading strategy awareness and use. The pedagogical implication is that monoloingual ESL learners need more instruction than their bilingual peers in the strategic reading of poetry.
