Abstract:
The methods which are used in clllTent building codes and seismic design of structures are generally linear elastic. The seismic behavior of a structure can be best analyzed using non-linear static analyses (pushover analyses). One of the most recent approaches to evaluate the nonlinear response of structures is energy-based pushover analysis. In this paper, a review of the energy-based pushover analysis and the concept of energy balance is presented; By converting the force-displacement diagram into an energy capacity plot and then superimposing this diagram over the corresponding energy demand plot, the peak displacement demand can be determined. The pushover curve is calculated considering that, in each step, the work of the floor forces is equal to the structure internal work and is demonstrated in terms of energy capacity. Anumerical example using fmite-element model is discussed; results from the energy-based pushover analysis are compared with the results from nonlinear time-history analysis and regular pushover analysis. The results show that the energy-based analysis can be used effectively to estimate the response under a given ground motion.
