Abstract:

The application of probiotic bacteria in aquaculture has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the health and productivity of aquatic species while addressing the challenges of sustainability and disease management. Probiotics, defined as live microorganisms that confer health benefits to their hosts, offer numerous advantages, including improved growth performance, enhanced immune responses, and reduced reliance on antibiotics. However, the safety aspects of probiotic use are critical, encompassing potential risks such as pathogenicity, antibiotic resistance, and disruption of native microbial communities. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the safety profiles of probiotics in aquaculture, focusing on strain selection, regulatory considerations, and the need for rigorous safety assessments. It highlights the importance of harmonized guidelines to ensure the safe and effective application of probiotics. Additionally, future research directions are discussed, emphasizing the need for optimized delivery methods, exploration of synbiotics, and long-term ecological impact assessments. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and prioritizing the safety and efficacy of probiotics, the aquaculture industry can leverage the benefits of these beneficial microorganisms to promote sustainable practices and enhance the resilience of aquatic ecosystems. Ultimately, this review contributes to the ongoing discourse on the responsible use of probiotics in aquaculture, aiming to support the industry's growth while safeguarding the health of aquatic organisms and their environments.
