Abstract:
Algae are photosynthetic microorganisms that can be used for wastewater treatment, as they can remove various pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, and organic compounds through biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation. Algae can also produce valuable biomass that can be used for various applications such as biofuels, bioplastics, fertilizers, and animal feed. In this article, we review the current state of the art of algae-based wastewater treatment, focusing on the mechanisms, methodologies, and challenges involved. We also discuss the potential of algae as a source of renewable energy and bioproducts, and the environmental and economic benefits of using algae in wastewater treatment. Finally, we highlight the future research directions and opportunities for algae in wastewater treatment and resource recovery.
