Abstract:

Hydrogen fuel cell trucks offer significant advantages for sustainable freight transportation, including zero tailpipe emissions, high energy efficiency, and quiet operation. These vehicles are particularly well-suited for long-haul applications due to their fast refueling times and extended driving ranges compared to battery-electric alternatives. This paper introduces a systematic design procedure for estimating the driving range of hydrogen fuel cell trucks by integrating mechanical vehicle parameters, hydrogen storage specifications, and battery bank characteristics. The methodology accounts for energy consumption across representative driving cycles, incorporating propulsion demands, fuel cell efficiency, and auxiliary energy contributions from the battery system. By combining dynamic vehicle modeling with energy flow analysis, the proposed framework enables accurate range prediction under diverse operational scenarios. The approach offers a practical tool for the design and evaluation of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
