Abstract:
The role and impact of digital and AI-based tools in all aspects of life, especially in the field of education, including language teaching, is obvious. Teachers, language learners and businesses are constantly looking for ways to make AI more effective in language learning, and AI-based solutions are valuable strategies in this area. These technologies facilitate interactive environments, automatic feedback, and adaptive platforms that enhance language skills, promoting pedagogical reconfiguration that increases engagement, performance, and knowledge retention. To clarify the effect of using AI-based tools on the quality of teaching English as a second language, this study systematically examines and critically analyzes empirical research on the use of AI in ESL/EFL with a qualitative and documentary methodology. Based on the identification, analysis, and selection of some relevant academic studies, the opportunities, challenges, and trends related to the implementation of AI in various educational contexts were explored. The results show that AI strengthens student autonomy and motivation, favoring more active and personalized learning processes. However, their full integration still faces significant structural barriers, such as limited connectivity, lack of teacher training, and insufficient curricular adaptation, especially in Iran. In conclusion, while AI offer great potential to transform English language teaching, addressing these challenges is critical to ensuring effective, equitable, and sustainable implementation in today's education systems.
