Abstract:
Nowadays a new hexagonal pixel structure has been introduced. Hexagonal structure is an image structure alternative to traditional square image structure. The hexagonal structure has been researched to improve computer vision and image processing. Because of having several benefits, the hexagonal structure is very highly regarded. In addition canny edge detector is the most popular tool for edge detection and has many applications. Therefor it seems that, research on edge detection and hexagonal structure can be a beneficiary area of researching. In this paper, we compare performance of the canny edge detector in hexagonal structure with square structure. Experimental results show that when Gaussian noise is added to the image, canny edge detector in hexagonal structure has better performance than the square structure, except when the edges are basically horizontal or vertical lines
