Abstract:
The Nahjul Balagha is the most famous collection of sermons, letters, tafsirs and narrations by Imam Ali. Translation of this book has always posed challenges to translators due to its brevity and eloquence. This article aims at exploring the translation procedures applied by Chittick (1982) in rendering Nahjul Balagha into English. To this end, the translation procedures applied by Chittick were investigated and categorized based on the frameworks proposed by Catford and Vinay & Darbelnet. The research findings revealed the challenge that the translator had to facein rendering the eloquence and brevity of the source speech into English. Finally, Chittick has failed to recreate the same level of eloquence and brevity, as he has changed many of the structural aspects and the point of view of the source text in his translation.
