Role of garlic in dyslipidemia: an evidence based review abstract
Rapidly growing morbidity and mortality due to heart disease isa great concerned for scientist. Among the etiology ofatherosclerosis, dyslipidemia is a major risk factor. Garlic has activeingredients of allium sativum used in high blood pressuremanagement. Garlic has been used as a therapeutic agent for manyillnesses such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and cardiovasculardiseases. Evidence from various studies and clinical trials proved theefficacy of garlic to reduce lipid level.However, some contradictoryresults are also reported. This review was undertaken to assess therole of garlic therapy in dyslipidemia. Major databases includingGoogle, PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cochrane library view were used forliterature search. Clinical trials conducted on humans assessing roleof garlic therapy in dyslipidemia and the possible mechanismsresponsible for such therapeutic actions were assessed. Several trialsand meta-analyses have suggested positive effect of garlic on totalcholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high densitylipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides (TG). This review on garlic therapyin dyslipidemia suggests that it reduces elevated cholesterol to amodest extent.
