Large deflection analysis of an elastic simply-supported beam subjected to a concentrated moving load abstract

Beams are of important structural components in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and aerospace. deflection caused by a beam carrying a moving load is the greater than that under a static load. Hence, the mechanical behavior of beams carrying moving load has been the attention of researchers in recent years. Passing cars on the bridge, moving trains on the railway, and underground piping systems are examples of such issues.Gbadeyan and Oni [1] developed a general approach to determining solutions of both moving force and moving mass problems for both Euler–Bernoulli and Rayleigh beams having any of the classical end-support conditions. In order to predict the bending behavior of elastic beams with a higher accuracy, some authors have been considered the large deflection problem in these structures. Bisshopp and Drucker [2] obtained the elliptic integrals solution for large deflections of a point loaded beam. Ronde [3] developed an approximate series solution considering uniformly distributed loads. Holden [4] resorted to the numerical methods. Chien [5] presented a perturbation solution through the biparametric perturbation method and He and Chen [6] gave a similar work.According to the authors’ knowledge no study has been yet conducted on the large deflection of structures under moving loads. Thus in this paper, attention is put on the nonlinear large deflection of an elastic simply supported beam under a moving load. A simply supported Euler-Bernoulli beam is considered under a point load moving with a constant speed along the beam.
