Abstract:
In 2006 Farber and Zeger proposed an algorithm for solving the optimum nonnegative integer bit allocation (ONIBA) problem with less complexity than other proposed algorithms. This algorithm is proposed for a static bit allocation and the algorithm does not work adaptively. This algorithm finds optimal bit allocation for some samples of a discrete signal. Optimum bit allocation for subband coding (SBC) is another well known subject in which the goal is to allocate the bits optimally to different subbands of a signal. Each subband has some samples and it is assumed that all the samples in a subband have the same variances. No optimal nonnegative integer bit allocation algorithm has yet been proposed for SBC. In this paper we first develop the ONIBA algorithm of Farber and Zeger for SBC. Then we make this algorithm adaptive and implement it on the adaptive SBC system using adaptive estimation for variance of samples in each subband. Finally we simulate the algorithm and compare the performance of the algorithm with the PCM method.
