Soil-Structure Interaction Effects on the Target and Maximum Displacements of Self Standing Steel Chimneys abstract
According to developments in construction of special structures in developing countries, current research is carried out on Self Standing Steel Chimneys, which is a kind of special structure and is used in several types of factories. In this research, the 3D finite element model of a steel chimney, previously designed and constructed in Armenia is determined. The chimeny is of 48.0 m high, supported by a R.C. pile cap and four piles. Analysis is carried out due to Armenian SNIP II-2.02-2006 seismic code, for soil types I~IV and Sa=0.20g~0.50g spectral acceleration levels, taking into account the Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) effects. The same process was carried out for the fixed based model, without taking into account the SSI effects. Then by using 10 accelerograms, recorded on each mentioned soil type, after scaling them to estimated spectral acceleration levels, a total of 320 Nonlinear TimeHistory analyses are performed on models, considering both with and without SSI effects. Later by performing a Modal Push-over Analysis the Target Displacemnets due to FEMA 356/440 guideline are computed for models with SSI effects and without it. Finally by using the achieved results of TimeHistory analyses, maximum displacements are computed for each model, according to soil specifications and estimated spectral acceleration levels and final results are discussed.
