Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of copper oxide nano particles on the friction and wear properties of AISI 316 steel material when the CuO nano particles are used as hydraulic oil additive. CuO were dispersed at 0.2, 0.5 and 1wt% in hydraulic oil using an ultrasonic during two-setp for 5 min. Wear and friction coefficient were obtained using sliding tribometer with pin-on-disk configuration, test were runed under 15 kg, sliding speed of 0.09 m/s and total distance of 1200 m. The worn steel surface were analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) after wear. The result showed that CuO nanoparticle that were used as a hydraulic oil additive exhibited reduction in friction coefficient and wear. Addition of CuO nanoparticle to hydraulic oil decreased friction coefficient and wear by 22 and 65% respectively as compared pure hydraulic oil. Suspension wit 0.5wt% of CuO had the lowest friction coefficient and wear.
