Abstract:

Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLD) are passive dampers, working based on shallow liquid sloshing in rigid tanks to suppress the horizontal structural vibrations induced by wind or other dynamics loads. In this paper, TLD application has been investigated using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) as a numerical tool to model 2D rectangular liquid sloshing absorbers to control ground-induced vibrations. Using SPH, the predicted inertia forces and water wave of a rectangular tank due to harmonic excitation with different frequencies were compared with the results obtained from Boundary Element Method (BEM) and experimental data as well. In addition, the effect of TLD on seismic response of a SDOF structure has been investigated and the results were compared with experimental data.
