Usage of Phased Array Ultrasonic Test in Inspection Systems abstract
Over the past decade the benefits of using phased arrays as a viable alternative to certain other NDT technologies have been realized. So it opens a wealth of opportunities that enhance the NDT engineer’s ability to provide highly accurate data and flexible services while reducing overall costs.
Phased Array is the latest advanced ultrasonic technology that operates by a computer controlled excitation of individual elements in a multi-element transducer. In short, Phased Array generates multiple ultrasonic signals, in nanoseconds, that produce controllable angles, focus depths and/or wide coverage from one inspection point. it offer major advantages over conventional radiographic inspection of welds such as no radiation hazard, chemical disposal , no disruption of production, plus near real-time inspection results. In comparison with conventional ultrasonic, phased arrays are significantly faster, more flexible, reproducible, and can be tailored to the application. Due to the ability to vary the beam angle and focal range, and to sweep the beam along the length of the probe. Therefore, this article will outline how ultrasonic phased arrays work, their advantages and its usage in inspection systems.
