Abstract:
Sustainable development in civil engineering in order to moderate environmental degradation has become a serious challenge recently. It should be noted that geotechnical engineering is the most influential subdivision of civil engineering to accomplish sustainable development and due to rising energy demand around the world; offshore geotechnical engineering has become one of the most concerning parts of the sustainable development‟s portrait.Although offshore platforms and geotechnical engineering are not new concepts in Iran and both of them are used in oil and gas fields in Persian Gulf for decades, due to higher water depths (325 to 1025 meters) in southern Caspian Sea, there are some difficulties ahead. In recent years, due to this difficulty, Iranian companies are losing the fierce competition of oil and gas extraction in Caspian Sea‟s fields. The problem lays within the failure in sustainable development of offshore geotechnical engineering .In this study, with regard to water depth of the Caspian Sea and the state of art of designing offshore platforms, the existing strategies for sustainable development of offshore platforms in the southern part of Caspian Sea are discussed, though with more concentration on foundation systems
