Abstract:
The response of an equivalent 1 m-thick layer of dry, medium-dense, Toyoura Sand is measured in the laminar box under nine 1-D, horizontal harmonic motions with an amplitude of acceleration inside the model ground varying from 0.1 g to 0.4 g applied to the base of the laminar box. The frequencies of excitation varied from 1 Hz to 10 Hz. Laser displacement transducers and inside accelerometers were used to directly measure the outside lateral deformation and shear stress at different elevations of laminar box, respectively. Several 1-D site response analysis techniques are employed to simulate the experiments, including (a) linear, (b) equivalent linear analyses, (c) nonlinear analyses. Vs profile was estimated using empirical correlation. Soil dynamic properties included published shear modulus reduction and damping curves were obtained using laboratory test data of the laminar box. Results show that nonlinear method of site response analysis compared to the linear and equivalent linear method is closer to experimental results.
