A GREEN CHEMICAL METHOD FOR SYNTHESIS OF CUO NANOPARTICLES FROM AMINO ACID AS FRICTIONREDUCTION AND ANTI-WEAR ADDITIVE IN LUBRICATING OIL abstract

Lubricants based on hydrocarbon-type mixtures do not satisfy all requirements of OEMs(Original equipment manufacturers) for modern applications. The usual solution is the addition ofsmall amounts of certain additive compounds that render significant improvements in base oilproperties such as oxidative degradation, tribological performance and other characteristics. As a partof the desire to save the environment via green chemistry practices, this study examined a greenchemical method for synthesis of CuO nanoparticles from nontoxic and biocompatible chemicals,amino acids, at low temperatures where no pollutant or combustible side product is produced asfriction-reduction and anti-wear additive in lubricating oil. In this recipe, a binary Cu(II) Schiff basecomplex is obtained from valine where water is used as solvent and biologically compatible amino acidis used as a nitrogen source instead of toxic amines. The Schiff base complex is subsequently heattreated to synthesize CuO particles. The formation of single phase CuO particles is confirmed by XRDθ-2θ patterns and FTIR spectra. TEM and SEM micrographs indicate the formation of nanoparticleswith a particle size of 60 nm. This study emphasizes on green chemistry and synthesis of nanomaterialsas friction-reduction and anti-wear additive in lubricating oil through environmentally friendly methodsto save our planet and its reservoirs for future and next generations.
