Abstract:

Gastric cancer is the most common gastrointestinal cancer that is especially high incidence in areas of the North West in Iran. Unlike in Western countries and Japan, the incidence of stomach cancer inIran has been rising in the past two decades. Health care costs associated with cancer are classified in different ways. The most recognized category of the costs, are direct costs of treatment. These costs are directly related to the provision of medical services for patients. The aim of this study is to identify and determine the cost of diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer in patients referred to Omid hospital in Mashhad. This study is a cross-sectional study as a retrospective cohort. 449 records of patients with gastric cancer who were referred Omid hospital in Mashhad from 1384 to 1393 was conducted in this study. This study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage services for the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer were identified by using valid guidelines. In the second stage a form of case study was required services that patient s received. The cost of diagnosis and treatment of patients according to frequency of required services extracted and calculated by excel 2010. The results showed men 76% and women 24% of patients who admitted to Omid hospital with stomach cancer. The mean patient age was 63 years. The total direct costs of non-metastatic and metastatic gastric cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment in 449 patients referred to the hospital in accordance with the tariffs in 1394 totaled 20,413,424,800 Rial and equivalent to $ 588,622. Review and assess the costs is a component of the main tools for prioritizing and making decisions about resource allocation whit limited resources. Evidence-based decision-making in the field of resource allocation undoubtedly would not be possible without the cost of illness studies. Managers and policy makers of health systems should be consider cost of illness studies as baseline studies economic in health
