Contrast Improvement of Mammography Images Using a New Adaptive Technique abstract

Contrast improvement is one of the most important steps in image enhancement techniques used in medical image processing such as mammography. In order to boost the image contrast, an indirect optimization technique has been developed in the space of two-dimensional (2D) histograms. As a traditional method, histogram equalization has undesirable effects. In order to reduce these deficiencies, an improvement of recursive mean-separate histogram equalization using a fusion of contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization is proposed. Evaluating results using two effective measurement techniques e.g. peak signal-to-noise ratio and effective measure of enhancement, shows that the suggested method has significant results in contrast enhancement.
