Experimental investigation of pressure drop during flow boiling ofR-134a inside smooth flattened tubes abstract

In this study, the pressure drop of R-134a under convective boiling conditions in horizontal plane flattened tubes was investigated. Plane copper tubes with internal diameter of 8.7 mm and thickness of .4 mm were successfully flattened into oblong shape with different internal height of 6.6 mm, 5.5 mm, 3.8 mm and 2.8mm. The experiments were carried out for mass velocities from 74 kgm-2s-1 to 106 kgm-2s-1 and vapor qualities from approximately 25% to 95%. The results showed that the pressure drop increases for a given mass velocity and vapor quality, as the tube profile is flattened. Also, the pressure drop increases by increase of mass velocity and vapor quality for all the tube profiles as expected.
