A Review on Seismic Resistance & RBS Connections abstract

Using moment frames as a lateral load bearing system due to its ductility and energy dissipation have been of designers interests. Northridge (1994) and Kobe (1995) earthquakes highlighted poor performance of the traditional bolted and welded connections. An unexpected brittle rupture in beam to column connections of steel moment frame systems were observed. Thus, in these connections in order to provide demanded strength and ductile capacity, it is necessary to prevent brittle fragility. To this end, many ideas have been proposed. We can divide these ideas in to the two major category; strengthening of the connection and intentional reduction in beam section. In this paper, we will investigate methods regarding strengthening and reducing beam section in connection, effects of each method on connection behavior, and moving force and deformation demands away from the column face
