Smart Charging of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles in a Typical Distribution Network abstract

With the increased concerns about environmental problems and at the same time significant advances in rechargeable energy storage system technologies, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) seems to have a major role in the future transportation systems. However, the problems associated with high penetration of PHEVs together with their uncoordinated charging may lead to serious impacts on distribution power systems. Smart charging of PHEVs provides an adequate solution to address negative effects to some extent with minimum manipulating the existing system infrastructures. In this paper, the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) method is used for smart charging of PHEVs. The proposed strategy aims to simultaneously minimize the cost of energy supplied to PHEVs incurred by Distribution System Operator (DSO) and total power losses cost while maintaining the system Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) and other technical constraints within an acceptable range. The obtained results indicate the functionality and effectiveness of smart charging in realization of aforementioned criteria
