Evaluating Practical Control Methods of Urban Runoff – Case Study: Tehran, Iran abstract

Growing population rate and urbanization have had serious impacts on water resources management in megacities. In fact, land cover change and urban development tend to increase the flooding risk and cause hazardous events. However, sustainable policy making and development can greatly mitigate the flooding risk and enhance the resilience of megacities. In this paper, assessment of practical and innovative control methods of urban runoff is presented followed by a short discussion on urban runoff control methods in Beijing and Houston. Furthermore, efficiency of storm water management control systems in Tehran, as the case study location, is assessed and compared to other megacities. Finally, based on current conditions, existing limitations and effective and practical methods implemented in other cities, a comprehensive set of recommendations is presented for enhancing urban runoff management systems in Tehran
