Abstract:
Bioactive materials have been widely studied in medical applications. Bioceramics and bioglasseshave always been considered as bioactive materials for hard tissue substitutes because of thebiocompatibility, bioactivity and mineral similarity to bone tissue. However, researchers havealways sought to increase the biological function and mechanical properties of these materials. Itseems that the incorporation of ion dopants sach as lithium (Li), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg),manganese (Mn), strontium (Sr), titanium (Ti) into bioactive ceramics and bioactive glass can bepromising in orthopedic applications due to the similarity of bone mineralogy and non-toxicity,which can ultimately improve bone remodeling. This review evaluates the use of the metal ions inhydroxyapatite (HA), calcium silicate bioceramics (CS) and bioglass (BG) in order to provide amore accurate insight into the use of these ions in bioactive biomaterials. In general, according tothe review study, it seems that the addition of these ions to this category of biomaterial may affectthe function of the formation and differentiation of bony cells.
